Life Size Lego Car Powered by Air

Drift Trikes Peru.

PAL-V Flying Car – Maiden Flight. This week the Dutch company PAL-V announced the first flights of its prototype “flying car”. This unique vehicle is called the PAL-V One, or the ‘Personal Air and Land Vehicle’, and It marks the start of a new era. On the ground the vehicle drives like a sports car. Within minutes its rotor is unfolded and its tail is extended: then it is ready to take off thanks to the advanced gyrocopter technology. With these successful test results it is proven that it is not only possible to build a flying car but also that it can be done within existing international rules for both flying and driving. Having passed this important milestone the company is now inviting investors to join them in creating the future. The next step will be the design of the first commercial production model of the PAL-V, and first deliveries are expected in 2014. For 100 years people have dreamed of a flying car, and many attempts have been made to realize this dream, but now it has truly become a reality.

The urushi bicycle project – VANHULSTEIJN X SOTHEBY’S.Exclusively for Sotheby’s Dutch designer Herman van Hulsteijn created a very special edition of 9 extraordinary Vanhulsteijn bicycles covered in a dazzling coat of Japanese urushi lacquer and gold leaf. The curve is the single most distinguishing feature of this bicycle, stretching from the saddle toward the handlebars in front and terminating at the rear wheel at the back. It appears as if the rider is floating in mid-air. This particular bike design grew out of Hermans need to create ‘a good looking cycle’: a head-turner that is designed for fast, comfortable rides. At first he build a prototype just to himself, but as soon as he started riding around the city everybody wanted one. After selling a first batch of bikes, printed press and bloggers also noticed the innovative look of the Vanhulsteijn bicycle. This jump-started the development of the bike and allowed Herman to open the Vanhulsteijn shop and broaden his international clientele. Today the Vanhulsteijn bicycles are still handcrafted completely out of stainless steel in the middle of Arnhems working-class quarters by a small team of craftsmen using the latest techniques and a wide variety of high quality parts. For this occasion Vanhulsteijn teams up with two Russian artisans who specialize in Japanese lacquer techniques called urushi. This particular style of lacquer, Tsugaru Nuri implements several layers of gold leaf to achieve a stunning, rich effect that contrasts beautifully with the industrial parts of the bike. The layer of precious metal glows underneath the lacquer and creates an enormous feeling of depth whereby the pattern almost appears to be three dimensional. A pleasant side effect of this ancient Japanese technique is that every bike will have a naturally unique pattern. Needless to say all the bikes are fitted with the highest quality components available today which are listed below. Beside the frame, Herman van Hulsteijn designed the signature parts like the elegantly shaped brake levers and pedals himself. Every single part that has no lacquer on it was carefully polished by hand to highlight their shape. The ray-skin upholstery of the saddle and handle bar tops off the luxury look of the bike. Ultimately the bicycle is finished off with the Vanhulsteijn logo’s and number in the Maki-e technique: different grain sizes of gold dust sprinkled in urushi lacquer. Urushi is the sap of the urushi or lacquer tree (rhus vernicifera). It is a member of the sumac family (anacardiaceae) and native to China, Korea, Japan and the eastern Himalayas. The sap of this tree contains a resin (urushiol) which, when exposed to moisture and air, polymerizes and becomes a very hard, durable, plastic-like substance. Urushi is in fact a natural plastic. The process of applying the lacquer is long and labour intensive: independent of the size of the surface it takes on average 6 months to carry out the finishing. In some cases 60 layers are applied and polished by hand. Depending on the kind of lacquer the time it takes a single layer to dry can take from 2 hours up to 3 months. Due to its fascinating characteristics which are both sustainable and esthetically beautiful, urushi is still used for a wide variety of purposes. From its first use in the making of bowls, plates, trays, sake cups, boxes, combs and other objects, the use of urushi developed along with Japanese culture. In Japan the urushi bowl or plate became a part of the harmony of traditional Japanese food. In the noble court culture classical styles took form. Maki-e and raden urushi techniques elegantly used gold and silver to ennoble furniture, make up accessories, toys and writing implements. Urushi also became an integral part of the harmony of Natsume (tea canisters), Kogou (incense burners) and other tools and utensils used in the tea ceremony. In the Edo period people adorned themselves with urushi medicine cases, combs and hairpins. Many of these objects can be found in museums and private collections today. In the 20th century a number of designers working in France began to use Asian lacquer for furniture and other decorative arts. Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand are two of the artists who produced screens, furniture and paintings using Asian lacquer. Today, while many craftspeople still make beautiful lacquer ware, urushi has become an important material in the art scene in Japan and other parts of Asia. Contemporary artists are increasingly working with urushi, its colors, shapes and techniques in their paintings, art objects and jewelry. This combination of contemporary design and traditional craft is made to order and tailor made to Sotheby’s clients in a limited edition of 9 bicycles. Deus Ex Machina. What would a motorcycle look like if you didn’t cover up its insides with bright sheets of plastic? Beautiful, says this craftsman, who is building a bike that proudly displays every tube, wire and bolt. Like the bookshelf of a scholar, the tools of his shop record the ebb and flow of his passions over the years. This film explores the intimate relationship between a man and his machines.

Battles, Bikes and Breaking Records: Graeme Obree. A fascinating project in the making: a film about former cycling champion and maverick speed obsessive Graham Obree and his dream to break the world human powered speed record with a bike he hammered together on his kitchen table. It traces the story from that unremarkable kitchen in Ayrshire to the wobbly world record attempt in the Nevada desert. Complete with clumsy coffee spillages and gaffer tape holding together the strange, unstable wedge-bike the film’s a life affirming statement about the power of the human spirit and what we can achieve if we give it a go.

‘Riding With the 12 O’Clock Boys’. A group of dirt bike riders in Baltimore have been called reckless. But to them, riding their bikes provides a sense of escape. I still wanted to understand why they do it, considering that it’s illegal to ride dirt bikes in the streets of Baltimore, and dangerous — there have been crashes and violent altercations between dirt bike riders and other vehicles and serious collisions with pedestrians, but no deaths recorded this year, according to the Baltimore Police Department. As you’ll see in this Op-Doc video, the 12 O’Clock Boys, as reckless as they may be, provide a sense of purpose for many of Baltimore’s marginalized youth.

Bike Smut!. The only way to see Bike Smut is when it plays in a theater, bike shop or basement for a live audience. There are no DVDs for sale and no screeners for the media. This creates a challenge for us but is the only way to ensure the filmmaker’s privacy, and it woks. After more than 1,000 screenings we have had no leaks. We keep filmmakers’ identity as safe as they desire. Bike Smut is a shared experience. Typically we view porn only in the most private places in our home (or for some, at work) are rarely do we talk about it. This is a call for a more honesty in our sexuality. Sex happens. We can either ignore it or accept it. Watching Bike Smut in a social setting encourages talking about sex, gender and other topics considered taboo. Bike Smut is civic. Current political policies are designed to repress sexual expression and transportation choice. The Bike Smut film festival challenges that trend by enthusiastically displaying the quality of creative expression and the amount of fun inherent in both cycling and sex. Both actives are worth elements of a healthy lifestyle and a pleasant quality of life. Feeling bike-curious? Why don’t you tell us what you think bike porn is, or better yet show us by making a short film. Any consenting adult can do it!

Driven to Ride Trailer. Since the 1870′s women have been Driven to Ride… Two-wheeled vehicles gave women a first real taste of the wild thrill found in unfettered mobility. Victorian Age corsets and billowing skirts were set aside as riding unleashed the power hidden within and the freedom to give that power pursuit. Driven to Ride is a documentary that explores the unstoppable spirit and diversity of the women motorcycle riders. Riders featured in the documentary include Betsy Huelskamp, Erin Doherty-Ratay, Masyn Moyer, Janice Ferrante, Debra Conroy and Julie Graff. Betsy Huelscamp is a personal trainer, photographer and journalist. Betsy has been featured in Discovery Channel’s Motorcycle Women, National Geographic’s Hell on Wheels and TLC’s faking it. Betsy rides a custom Harley-Davidson chopper. Erin Doherty-Ratay is know for her Around-the-World tour with her husband Chris Ratay. Their adventure on two BMW motorcycles took more than four years (1999-2003) and covered 50 countries on six continents, while riding 101,322 miles. At the end of their journey, Erin and Chris discovered they had nearly doubled the record for Longest Motorcycle Ride (Team) and broke the Guinness World Records®. Masyn Moyer is a free spirited custom Harley-Davison chopper rider and an entrepreneur. Masyn is well know in motorcycle riding community and enjoys rocketing across the countryside. Janice Ferrante rides a BMW 650 GS and lives for off-road riding adventure. When the pavement ends… she begins her ride. Debra Conroy rides a BMW 1100 S and she thrives on long distance riding. She has been known to attempt to ride 50 Colorado mountain passes in 3 days. Julie Graff is a custom chopper builder and Julie was born to ride. Both her mother and father are avid vintage Harley Davidson riders and collectors. Julie began to ride at the young age of four and remembers being dropped off at pre- school on her mother’s 1969 Harley Davidson Sportster. Women continue to shape and push the boundaries of two-wheeled freedom. The call of the road stirs in their blood. A call they answer down a thousand Interstates, and black-tops, and dusty country roads. Highways and byways that sail past in the raw sweep of wide-open spaces. Women climb aboard and tear off — embracing the wild exhilaration of acceleration…Driven to Ride. Coming Fall 2013.

Gostei. 8)

The 3-D Printed Electric Motorcycle. One Italian manufacturing company is using 3-D printing techniques to create art, satellites and even an electric motorcycle. Here’s a look at how the technology works and why more companies are exploring it.

Indian Motorcycle: The Spirit of Munro. In an earlier era when the only kind of men were full-grown, a gent from New Zealand dreamt of setting a land speed record on his trusty 1920 Indian Scout. Burt had been a motorcycle racer of some repute at home, not to mention a motorcycle salesman and mechanic, so he literally was one of those romantics burning the midnight oil to modify his bike. With limited funds at his disposal, Munro created rudimentary solutions to his need for more speed and, in 1962, his dream finally came true as the Munro Special set a record in the 883 cc class with 178.95 mph at Bonneville. Indian commissioned Jeb Scolman of Jeb’s Metal and Speed in Long Beach, CA. to build the Spirit of Munro, an all-metal tribute to “the racers and mechanics throughout history” who have helped build the legacy of Indian record-breakers. Looking like the Munro Special that broke the under-1000cc land-speed record in 1967 but with the benefit of more resources and a modern Thunder Stroke motor, the Spirit of Munro honors the past and powers the future.

Tribute to Mert Lawwill. Mert Lawwill may not have raced professionally since 1977 due to an inner-ear disorder that affected his balance, but he has never strayed away from the sport. His legend has continued as a technician, building race motorcycles and mountain bikes (he’s in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame too), not to mention inventing a prosthetic arm for folks who want to ride a motorcycle. Mert is the ultimate example of making lemons into lemonade. But what a career he had before! With 161 career American Motorcyclist Association Grand National finishes in 15 years, Mert’s legend is assured. He even went Hollywood with the Steve McQueen-backed On Any Sunday, which was nominated for a 1972 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. As a tribute to Mert’s racing prowess, here’s a video collage with accompaniment from Iggy and the Stooges.

This Slick Augmented-Reality Helmet Has a Rearview Camera, Weather Reports. The Skully P1 combines smartphone-pairing and voice controls with a HUD showing both turn-by-turn directions and a full 180-degree view of what’s behind the rider. According to Skully, that not only provides a complete view of the rear, but entirely eliminates blind spots. The Skully Synapse HUD is integrated into the helmet visor and appears to float around 20 feet ahead of the rider’s field of view. Although the map is persistent, two views are available: one with a simple design incorporated into the rearview display and another for more detailed turn-by-turn navigation. Skully claims the lithium ion battery is good for nine hours — a full day’s worth of riding — and the helmet will meet both the U.S. DOT and European ECE safety standards.

Who Killed The Electric Car? Who Killed the Electric Car? is a 2006 documentary film that explores the creation, limited commercialization, and subsequent destruction of the battery electric vehicle in the United States, specifically the General Motors EV1 of the mid 1990s. The film explores the roles of automobile manufacturers, the oil industry, the US government, the California government, batteries, hydrogen vehicles, and consumers in limiting the development and adoption of this technology. After a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, it was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Classics in June, 2006 and then on DVD by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on November 14, 2006. During an interview with CBS News, director Chris Paine announced that he had started a new documentary about electric cars with a working title of Who Saved the Electric Car?, later renamed Revenge of the Electric Car, which had its world premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival on Earth Day, April 22, 2011.

It’s Better In The Wind – Short Film. For the last two years I have been taking still photographs for a personal project entitled ‘It’s Better In The Wind,’ all the while collecting video footage from each ride as we traveled around the Western United States together. I have been slowly editing the footage into a visual scrapbook of sorts for those who partook, and those who followed us via the web. No preaching the triumphs and failures of the motorcycle industry, no divisive commentary between manufacturers and styles…just a collection of imagery that will hopefully inspire more people to take to the road and discover what there is outside of our respective communities. Chuck Ragan was kind enough to collaborate with me to write an original soundtrack for the film, to give me some anthemic tunes to edit with, and I can’t thank him enough for the kind gesture towards a fellow traveler. Please, enjoy the film, everybody who took part in it is family, we are all grateful for your support these past two years while we tried to build a concept around the positive nature of motorcycling.
